Collecting Data Journey 

Day-1 collecting data in Langkawi

📍Location: During the first day, we approach our respondent  around our accommodation at Kuah 

 

Challenges:

  • Many of the respondents hesitate to answer the survey as from their perspective, the survey has too many questions. Most of them are related with the food and beverage industry

  • Some of the respondents is an old citizens and they are having a hard time reading and answering the survey, so we need to assist them by reading the questions.

Day-2 collecting data in Langkawi

📍Location: Pantai Chenang & Pekan Kuah

Challenges:

  • Many stores are closed as it is Ramadhan, so lesser tourists go to Pantai Chenang. Therefore, many SMEs decided to just close their store.

  • Many stores at Pantai Chenang are handled by employees who have little knowledge of the business finances. Hence, they are not eligible to answer the survey.

  • Most of the respondents that we approach refuse to answer the survey as they are busy working.

Respond from the SMEs: According to one of the sellers at Pantai Chenang, he experience lesser customers as tourist from overseas is not coming. This s because in his opinion currently Europe's country is experiencing summer. So the tourist from overseas avoid going to Malaysia.

Day-3 collecting data in Langkawi

📍Location: Beras Terbakar & Dataran Lang

Experience: During the first day, we approach SMEs around our accommodation. 

 

Challenges:

  • Many of the stores are  closed around Beras Terbakar

  • Many of the stores are also managed by employees who have little knowledge of the business financials which makes them not eligible to answer the survey

  • Many of the respondents are busy and refuse to answer the survey

Respond from the SMEs:

  • According to one of the respondents, before covid-19 she has three hijab stores, however, after the covid-19 happen she has to let go of two stores and employees. The MCO has caused her business unable to operate (non-essential business). Therefore, she does not have the money to pay store rent and employees' wages.

  • According to one of the SMEs, she does not adapt to online business, as her product (Batik) is not allowed to be posted outside Langkawi due to the government rules. Moreover, she does not go to any business class to because she will lose sales as she has no staff to manage the store.

Day-4 collecting data in Langkawi

📍Location: Kompleks Haji Ismail group & Padang Mak sirat

 

Respond from the SMEs:

  • According to one of the respondent, previously she has 3 souvenir store, but due to Covid-19 she loss her income and fail to pay store and staff rent. There is demand for Batik from customer, however, the government not allow batik to be post outside from Langkawi.
